As we discussed in April’s community call, over the next few months our community-level programming will focus on weaving closer connections between members of our community of practice so that no one feels left behind as we continue to grow. Our first activity in service of this goal is a curated networking event during May’s community call.
Please note: registration for this event has closed, and we are unable to accommodate participants who are not already signed up. Keep an eye out for more networking opportunities over the summer, which we’ll announce on Slack and in our monthly newsletter.
Personalized networking – A community experiment!
We’re trying something new to us this month by tailoring each participant’s networking experience to them. In preparation for the event, we asked anyone interested in attending to let us know a little bit more about who they would like to meet. For example, people requested to be connected with others who are working with communities in similar scientific disciplines, or who are at similar career stages, or who are working within a particular geographical area. Almost 60 members of our community of practice responded, and so now we’re working through these responses to facilitate connection.
How is this going to work? Seamlessly, we hope!
Using Zoom, we’re going to set up a bunch of breakout rooms, and then we’ll assign everyone a “networking dance card” detailing which room to go to and when. They’ll cycle through up to eight one-on-one conversations plus a small group discussion, offering the opportunity to establish or deepen individual relationships as well as gain a broader perspective on the types of work other members are doing.
We’ll also have some time in the main room to check in and see how everyone is doing, as well as taking any feedback on the event and ideas for future gatherings.
We look forward to seeing you there!
[If you missed out on registering for this event, don’t worry! We will be announcing more social summer programming soon, and may offer a similar networking event in the fall.]
