News from the CSCCE: June 2020

With the global Black Lives Matter movement prompting many communities to have difficult conversations that address racist ideas and policies, being able to build and maintain healthy communities in science is more important than ever. At CSCCE, our goal is to support those building scientific communities, and diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility are central to this.

In this month’s newsletter, we highlight some resources in service of this aim.

From core values to behaviors

Having difficult discussions requires delineating safe spaces in which to meet, something that we have been working on for some time. This month we finalized and published our core values, which were co-created with our community. These values will frame all of our programming, training, and research going forward as we work to create an inclusive, supportive, and engaging environment for learning and growing together.

In creating our core values we used a CSCCE framework, which formed the basis of a workshop we co-hosted at the Science of Team Science conference earlier this month. We also recently convened a “Getting SET to Scale” workshop for NSF INCLUDES, which focused on building diverse, equitable, inclusive, and accessible communities in science. Please get in touch if you are interested in offering these trainings in your organization.

New resources available

This month we launched our In-person community events resource page. It includes a new open access guidebook for building community through events, which was created by the CA²L²M Events 2019 CEFP Project Team.

A Slack guidebook

We also published a guide to creating engaging communities on Slack. This guidebook is accompanied by an appendix containing additional resources and worksheets to help you build your online community.

CSCCE special interest groups

Our community of practice continues to grow and evolve. To help facilitate conversation, two new special interest groups are now active, focusing on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and Data Science.
