Looking ahead to 2021

It’s the end of an unprecedented year, one necessitating more resilience, adaptability, and grace than any of us had planned for. As we reflect on 2020, we are proud of what we have accomplished, but recognize that productivity is far from the best way to measure this year.

Instead, we’d like to say thank you to all of the community managers, facilitators, and virtual event organizers who’ve worked so hard to smooth the transition to working remotely; who’ve helped with the adoption of new tools and made the most of the opportunities and challenges of working together online. We’re glad to support you and we look forward to continuing to do so in 2021.

This tip sheet offers common definitions and file types, some things to consider before you decide to caption your event, and a decision tree to think through exactly what you need, and the platforms that already exist to help you, free or otherwise.

New resource: Guidebook of curated resources for inclusive virtual events

In the first part of the guidebook we shared 12 “recipes” for online meetings and events. In this newest section of the guide, which was also co-authored with members of our community of practice, we bring together a range of existing resources about event planning, facilitation, transitioning conferences online, and much more.

Community Potluck Party

This year’s potluck will take place on Wednesday, 16 December at 7pm UTC / 2pm EST. Join us for our annual celebration and reflection, and bring a “course” (instructions in the blog post!), connect with fellow scientific community managers, and raise a glass to the highs and lows of 2020.
