New season – new staff, programming, and resources

September can often feel like the start of a new year, with a “back-to-school” sentiment that inspires new ideas, directions, and projects. Here at CSCCE, we’re looking forward to a new season of community programming as well as releasing new resources including the second part of our Community Participation Model guidebook focused on community champions.

In new beginnings, this month we also welcomed Donna Okubo to the CSCCE team, a talented fundraiser, open science proponent, and, most importantly for us, membership program developer. As our new Membership Director, she’ll be working to pilot an institutional membership program for CSCCE, a key facet of our financial sustainability plan.

And, this week sees a new cohort of 20 community managers in STEM begin their journey through “Scientific Community Engagement Fundamentals,” our ever-popular foundational training.

Donna brings more than 14 years of experience in open access and open science to the role of CSCCE membership director. Her talent for seeking out and maintaining partnerships across a diverse range of academic, infrastructure, and industry organizations will be pivotal as CSCCE builds its own institutional membership program.

New CSCCE resource explores the role of champions in building and sustaining communities in STEM

Our latest guidebook explores community champions, emergent leaders who take on additional roles within a community to ensure its success – sometimes also known as ambassadors or fellows. The new guidebook builds on our Community Participation Model, which describes how community members engage with community programming and the ways community managers can design activities and events that meet members where they are.

CSCCE Community Profiles: A year in the life of 27 communities in STEM

Over the summer, we created and released 14 new community profiles to add to our original collection of 13. Each profile is a free-to-download infographic that provides a snapshot of the community’s structure and programming, as well as a look at its outputs, challenges, and plans for the future. This ongoing research project inspired us to release the Community Participation Model last year, and the newest profiles also contain information on community champions.
