Heading into the new year at CSCCE

2021 came to a close in a flurry of activity for CSCCE. In this new year 2022 edition of our newsletter, we take some time to reflect on the last 12 months, and also share some news of exciting things to come. The regular monthly newsletter schedule will resume later this month!

On the blog you can read a more detailed account of our 2021, but here’s how things went “by the numbers”:

Our community of practice grew by more than 100 members and now includes more than 350 scientific community managers
We released 8 guidebooks and tip sheets, as well as 19 new community profiles
Downloads of our resources on Zenodo surpassed 21,000
We ran 4 cohorts of community engagement fundamentals (and we’re sold out for our first cohort of 2022)
We ran 11 community calls and our champions programs working group met almost every month to work on new resources coming out in 2022
Behind the scenes, we worked with 13 new or ongoing clients on a range of projects

Supporting inclusive communities is one of our priorities and, coming up in 2022, we’re thrilled to start working with rOpenSci on a new champions program for historically excluded software contributors, and to begin a new project to expand the international reach of BioConductor – both thanks to Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Essential Open Source Software (CZI EOSS) grants. We’ll also be continuing work on an NSF IUSE-funded project to help students at minority serving institutions succeed in environmental data science.

Additionally, our training team has been developing new courses – the first of which will roll out later this quarter. Plus, we have several resources in the “almost there!” phase that we can’t wait to share.

News and updates

Reflecting on some highlights from 2021

In a new blog post, we summarize a few of CSCCE’s “greatest hits” from 2021. We reflect on the growth of our community of practice, the resources we’ve released into the world, the courses we’ve delivered, and the clients we’ve worked with. A big thank you to everyone we’ve collaborated with, and continue to do so, as well as our major funder, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

Training news: What to expect in 2022

CSCCE is the leading training organization for community managers in STEM, and in 2022 we’re adding some new options, including courses on communities of practice and content development. We’ve also started a pilot accessibility fund, with the aim of supporting as many scientific community managers as possible.

Empowering community leaders in open source

CSCCE will collaborate with rOpenSci on a new grant from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Essential Open Source Software (EOSS) program’s education and capacity building strategy. We’ll be working closely with the rOpenSci team to develop a champions program that will enable more members of historically excluded groups to participate in a range of open source and open science community projects.

Our December community call: A community potluck to wrap up 2021

Our December community call is traditionally a community potluck, with everyone contributing a little something to the call, and last year was no exception. We held space for reflection, made time for intention setting for the new year, and had a little fun!

We’re hiring, but the position depends on you!

We’re adding a little more flexibility to our current job search. As you’ll see below, we’re currently advertising for a Learning Program Manager and/or a Trainer and Curriculum Assistant. This blog post details our reasoning, as well as what we are looking for in any new hire joining the CSCCE team.

Crossref Head of Community Engagement and Communications

The Head of Community Engagement and Communications (CEC) is an exciting and newly-created leadership position, which reflects an evolution of Crossref’s former Marketing and Communications (‘marcomms’) approach to be more in line with our community-focused mission. Crossref is looking for someone who understands that community-led not-for-profit organizations need a different approach — co-creating, listening, and facilitating conversations — rather than simply broadcasting. As scientific community engagement is an emerging profession, practical experience in this area is more important to Crossref than traditional qualifications. The successful person may in fact have a technical background in scholarly communications but can show strong community management and communications skills. We prefer candidates who can show some familiarity or affinity with the work of the CSCCE and knowledge of the dynamics of scholarly communications.

CSCCE Trainer and Curriculum Assistant

As we continue to grow, CSCCE is looking to hire a Trainer and Curriculum Assistant to support the delivery of our existing online courses and devise and deliver new courses in 2022 under the supervision of our Lead Trainer. You’ll be working closely with our Center Director and Lead Trainer to deliver a wide range of trainings both remotely and, eventually, in-person to scientific community managers and scientific community organizations. These may include 8-week cohort-based courses, webinars, and workshops ranging from a half-day to multi-day experiences. This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic, growing organization and support many others in their vital community engagement work.

CSCCE Learning Program Manager and Trainer

The Learning Program Manager and Trainer for CSCCE is a key new role, helping to shape the long-term direction of CSCCE’s training offerings so that CSCCE remains the leading research and training organization to support scientific community managers and their organizations. As CSCCE has grown we’ve piloted several online learning courses and tested complementary online tools for virtual learning. We’re now ready to expand our offerings to support community managers in an ongoing learning journey with us, which will span a range of additional courses and other activities. As our Learning Program Manager, you’ll be working closely with CSCCE’s Center Director and Lead Trainer to design and deliver a new series of predominantly online trainings in 2022. Bringing experience designing and implementing community-centric programs that support learning and practical outputs, you’ll be attentive to learners’ needs, responsive in your communications, and take joy in providing challenging, supportive and impactful learning experiences.
