Resource updates: Case studies, tip sheets, and a new glossary section

Resource creation is a core part of what we do at CSCCE. In some cases, CSCCE staff author materials such as our core frameworks. But in others, we work with members of our community of practice to co-create resources that grow from shared experiences and conversations. This process is exemplified by the four new tip sheets on running a community champions program that synthesize the monthly discussions of our champions programs working group. The tip sheets are the first half of a nine-part series, with the remaining five coming out next month.

We were also co-creating with community members on our May community call – this time focusing on two resources about virtual events. The first is a glossary of virtual events terms, coalescing more than two years of adaptation to online convening. And the second resource is an update to the “Curated Resources” section of our virtual events guidebook to include more recent materials from around the web. Look out for both in the coming weeks!

And finally, we’re continuing to publish case studies of community managers in different STEM contexts – from leading DEI projects at professional associations to supporting research data management in universities. Catch up on your reading, because in July we’ll be sharing the next phase of this project – an in-depth synthesis of what we’ve learned about the current community management landscape in STEM.

You can now register for the Summer or Fall cohort of our foundational community management training. Scientific Community Engagement Fundamentals is an 8-week all virtual experience designed with new and experienced community managers in mind. It introduces core frameworks, concepts, and vocabulary in community management tailored to the STEM ecosystem. May Community Call – Revisiting Virtual Events

Two years after the pandemic pushed the majority of events online, we invited community members to discuss when virtual and hybrid formats work well, when they work poorly, and the tools that lead to success. We synthesized these conversations into a blog post in the hopes that it helps you plan engaging and inclusive events, and we’re finalizing two new resources co-created on the call.

Champions Programs Tip Sheets

This month, we published four tip sheets to help you plan and launch a community champions program. They were co-created by CSCCE staff and members of our champions programs working group, and complement the champions guidebook that we released last year. These four tip sheets will soon be joined by five more, each one illustrating one of the nine stages of community champions programs.

Community Manager Case Studies

Since the beginning of March, we’ve been releasing weekly case studies that highlight the work of individual STEM community managers. There are now 15 case studies available on our website, showcasing community manager roles in a variety of different organizational contexts, from professional societies to research collaborations.
