CSCCE and UC Berkeley receive two-year NSF POSE grant to deliver new training for open source leaders

This month, thanks to a $2 million grant from the US National Science Foundation (NSF), CSCCE will begin work to create and deliver a new training program for grantees in NSF’s Pathways to Enable Open-Source Ecosystems (POSE) program. As part of this newly-funded collaborative project, CSCCE staff will team up with the US Research Software Sustainability Institute (URSSI) and its leadership at the University of California, Berkeley to develop a curriculum that supports grantees as they work to ensure that their NSF-funded open source projects are secure and sustainable.

In addition to developing the new training curriculum, we’ll also be creating and sharing resources for broader use, such as case studies and recordings of talks with leading experts. And we’ll be building a new community of practice for open source leaders and practitioners, creating a virtual space for ongoing learning and development that reaches beyond the POSE program. In 2023, working closely with URSSI, we’ll be launching an unconference for open source projects.

With this new influx of funding for the Center comes the ongoing expansion of the CSCCE staff team. In this newsletter, we’re sharing three new ways you (or someone you know!) could join our all-remote team, as well as an opportunity to become URSSI’s first community manager.

CSCCE Lead Trainer and Curriculum Developer – Open Source Specialism

With a major focus of the grant being to create and deliver relevant training to leaders in the open source community, it’s crucial that the composition of our team in the classroom includes additional open source experience. CSCCE Project Manager – POSE Training Program

This position is perfect for a team-centric leader with excellent communication skills, keen attention to detail, and a process-oriented approach to getting things done. This role will involve taking the lead at multi-partner meetings, writing regular reports for different audiences, and synthesizing and integrating feedback. The new project manager will be responsible for ensuring all components of the project are delivered on time and within budget, managing partner communications and information flow, managing the grant budget, risk management, and coordinating stipends, reimbursements, and other administrative tasks.

CSCCE Director of Operations and Technology

Reporting directly to CSCCE’s Director, this unique role on the CSCCE senior leadership team has two main functions – oversight of technology and operations. Our successful hire will oversee the adoption and implementation of any and all technological solutions related to both the POSE program and our nascent certification program. They will also work closely with CSCCE’s fiscal sponsor Community Initiatives, and our administrative support firm, to ensure that CSCCE continues to run effectively and within budget as we continue to grow as an organization.

URSSI Community Manager

The new URSSI Community Manager will be taking on a brand new role, and building a new community from the ground up. They will be responsible for day-to-day tasks such as maintaining the URSSI website, connecting with members via Zoom and Slack, and curating content for a monthly newsletter. They will also coordinate URSSI’s monthly community call and work with URSSI and CSCCE staff on a new unconference for open source developers and research software engineers.

The CSCCE Community Manager Certification Program

Regular readers of the CSCCE newsletter will know that in July we announced a new certification program for STEM community managers. We’re still accepting community feedback on this initial announcement to shape our next steps, so let us know if you’re interested in the program (or the new courses it includes) using this form.

September’s community call: Advocating for yourself to chart a career path

This month we’re hosting an off-the-record community call co-moderated by members of the community of practice to talk about self-advocacy in a variety of contexts.
