CSCCE Training update

Upcoming professional development opportunities

In September, we launched the CSCCE Community Manager Certification Program. Our first cohort is now well underway, so we’re back in your inbox to tell you about what’s coming up on CSCCE’s training calendar!

Our professional development training offerings are designed to support STEM community managers at various career stages, who might be working in contexts that range from professional associations to research collaborations, infrastructure organizations to academia. You can join us for an online workshop, a multi-week course, or sign up to participate in our next cohort of the CSCCE Community Manager Certification Program. Or, you can reach out to us directly about working with us on a private cohort for your organization or local region.

The CSCCE Community Manager Certification Program

CSCCE’s Community Manager Certification Program builds upon our foundational Scientific Community Engagement Fundamentals (CEF) course to create a longer-form, multi-component, online program for STEM community managers. The program equips community managers and their organizations with necessary skills and frameworks to ground their work in a community-centric leadership approach – and to signal those qualifications to others.

Enrollment is currently open for the spring 2024 cohort of the CSCCE Community Manager Certification Program (CERT24Sp). Please complete the intent-to-enroll form to begin the registration process.

Multi-week online courses

Participants in CSCCE multi-week courses attend two live sessions per week, receive access to slides and course materials via Canvas, our learning management system, and are awarded a digital badge upon successful completion to demonstrate their new qualification.

Scientific Community Engagement Fundamentals

Scientific Community Engagement Fundamentals is an eight-week course designed to offer new or existing community managers core frameworks and vocabulary to describe their community’s purpose, refine or create strategic programming to engage community members around their shared goals, and identify ways to lower barriers to member participation.

Creating Community Playbooks

Playbooks or collaboration guides are written hubs that keep your community members, community champions, or community team on the same page by making visible the norms of your shared work. In this workshop-style course, we’ll talk about the different contexts in which playbooks are useful, different strategies for creating and maintaining them, and support participants as they create a “lite” playbook of their own.

Mini-workshops

CSCCE Mini-workshops are 90- to 120-minute sessions that introduce discrete ideas in community management or go deeper on a core framework.

Enacting culture change – The Four-Frame model

Many culture change projects are met with general enthusiasm at the conceptual level, but fall short during their implementation. In this Mini-workshop, participants will reflect on their own role as change agents and use Bolman and Deal’s Four-Frame Model to assess and describe different types of barriers to culture change initiatives (structural, human resources, political, and symbolic). We will then use the model to identify where community managers might exert leverage – and what specific actions could help to overcome the identified barriers.

Preparing for large-scale collaborations (Part 1)

In this first of a two part series of two-hour workshops, participants will explore dimensions of team readiness for large, multi-stakeholder collaborative initiatives and how a team readiness assessment can be used to identify the stage of their project and which areas they need to address as a priority. By the end of this workshop, participants will have drafted a survey for their project, and be ready to determine how to translate the survey responses into practical next steps in the second workshop.

Designing for large-scale collaborations (Part 2)

Prerequisite: Preparing for large-scale collaborations (Part 1)

In this second workshop of a two-part series, participants will debrief the team readiness surveys they drafted in workshop one. They will explore how to deploy the survey and how to report the results back to the community and determine next steps. Then, using a framework describing collaborative approaches, participants will identify which combination of approaches or activities will be helpful for the next stage of their collaboration.
