The people you want to reach with your content. This term implies a one-way flow of information: from you, to them. In community-engaged communications, consider how that flow might change to allow members to communicate back to you and/or with each other (see bi-directional communication and multi-directional communication). Defining your audience allows you to refine your choice of content type and the tone of your content.
