Yesterday we announced the selection of the first cohort of Fellows for the AAAS Community Engagement Fellows Program and introduced you to the three fellows who are promoting open collaboration in science in their communities. Now, we’d like to introduce the next four Fellows who are supporting global discipline-specific research networks. They’ll use similar strategies to develop communities as varied as Arctic scientists, collaborative brain researchers, and scientists investigating carbon inside Earth.

Word Cloud
Word cloud reflecting the 2017 Fellows’ goals for the coming year

We’re excited to be able to announce the inaugural class of the AAAS Community Engagement Fellows! Funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the AAAS Community Engagement Fellows Program is in its pilot year. The program’s mission is to improve community-building and collaboration in scientific organizations and research collaborations by providing a year of training and support to a cohort of scientific community managers.

The Fellowship will begin this January when the first cohort of Fellows gathers for a week-long training course at AAAS headquarters. They will work together with guidance from leaders in the field to develop tools and strategies for effective engagement in their communities. Over the next year the fellows will attend monthly webinars, report out their challenges and successes, and attend mid-year and end-of-year meetings.

A few weeks ago we opened applications for the pilot year of the AAAS Community Engagement Fellows Program. We’ve been excited to see applications coming in from individuals and potential host organizations. Some individuals are interested in joining the scientific community engagement field for the first time and others are current community managers, all from a wide variety of backgrounds and institutions. The potential host organizations we’ve been in touch with are also wide-ranging, from discipline-focused professional societies to major international research projects.

We’re excited to announce that applications are open for the AAAS Community Engagement Fellows Program through Sunday, October 16, 2016.

Funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the Fellows Program is in its pilot year. The program’s mission is to improve community-building and collaboration within scientific organizations, including both professional associations and research collaborations. The program will provide training and support to a cohort of scientific community managers for a full year.

You can learn more about the purpose and timeline of the program on our About page.

How to apply

We’re seeking two types of applicants for the fellowship: current scientific community managers, and individuals looking to enter the field and be placed in an organization. See our Become a Fellow page to read about what’s expected of Fellows during the program, and for info on the eligibility and selection criteria for each of these options.

We’re also keen to hear from organizations interested in hosting a Fellow. If your organization is interested in developing or facilitating your collaboration or community, please email us at communityfellows@aaas.org to start a conversation. You can read more about expectations during the program, eligibility, and application requirements for host organizations on the Host a Fellow page as well.

For more information about the program, including interviews with existing scientific community managers, see these related posts on the Trellis Blog.

Many organizations have communities. Why don’t they all have community managers?

Why don’t they all have community managers?”

In our first post about results from the State of Scientific Community Management Survey, we reported that while over half of community managers in science organizations have PhDs, their community management skills are usually self-taught or garnered through reading, networking, or mentorship.

In this post we report an overview of the types of organizations that were sampled by our survey, and why some organizations don’t have community managers. This is important for the Community Engagement Fellows Program because we intend to support scientific community managers in two broad variations of the role – either within professional societies and organizations or within research collaborations. We want to understand more about what those workplaces look like and how they differ.

Thanks to all the scientific community builders who have taken our State of Scientific Community Management survey so far! We hope you’ve been inspired by our recent Q&A series to think creatively about what a scientific community manager can be. Our intention with this survey is to gain a better understanding of the field and lay the foundation for the upcoming AAAS Community Engagement Fellows Program.

So far we have received survey responses from a variety of scientific community engagement professionals around the world, including the UK, Germany, and the US. Wherever you’re located, you can participate in the survey – so please help us include scientific community management practices from your region in our overall picture of the field.

We’re particularly interested in hearing from community professionals working with large research collaborations, either within one institution or around the globe! We know that some of the language used in the survey may not be familiar to community builders in academic science, but we hope you’ll give it a try anyway. Research communities are key to the future of scientific community management and we want our data to reflect that.

The survey takes less than 12 minutes to complete – that’s less than the time it takes your coffee to cool! So please fill it out and then share the link with your networks (https://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/2642025/AAAS-State-of-Scientific-Community-Management-Survey). If you have any questions about the survey, you can get in touch by emailing us at info@trelliscience.com.

Thank you for joining our effort to understand the current state of scientific community management! We look forward to reporting back with our findings.

Back in November, we announced the new AAAS Community Engagement Fellows Program. To recap: With support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, AAAS will run a one year pilot program to support the professional development of community engagement experts in the scientific community.

Starting in January 2017, an initial cohort of 18 community professionals will receive training and ongoing support to help strengthen and professionalize the role of community engagement within large-scale scientific collaborations and associations.
