A year-end message from CSCCE – and register for 2025 activities!
DECEMBER 2024 Newsletter
Wrapping up 2024, and some updates about 2025!
After a busy and sometimes turbulent 2024, we’re reflecting on a few of the things we’re most proud from the last 12 months, and looking ahead to some exciting activities in 2025!
Our top 5 highlights of 2024/2025
Project management trainings
We’re excited to be ending the year with two new training offerings ready for general registration! This year, we received funding from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to develop a Project Management for Scientists training that included a 2-hour introduction (PMI), followed by a six-module intensive (PMB) for those interested in going deeper. Having successfully piloted the training for CZI grantees this fall, we’ll be running the introductory session as a CSCCE Mini-workshop on 26 February 2025, followed by the in-depth training in the spring.
We’ve continued to receive interest in our trainings focussed on how to design and deliver engaging virtual meetings and events. This year, we’ve delivered these for general registration and privately for several clients, including as part of Ambassador program trainings. If you’re interested in exploring our “making a PACT” model, consider joining us in March, when we’ll be running the first part of our virtual events series again! You can also download and review the model and its applications in our four-part guidebook series.
As we celebrated our fifth anniversary this year, we also reached a couple of nice “arbitrary numerical milestones!” that show our continued growth. Our community of practice, which we host in Slack and is open to anyone working to build community or support collaboration in STEM, now has more than 800 members (we started with about 50 founder members back in 2019!). And our collection of free-to-download PDF resources, many of which were co-created by our community members, have been downloaded more than 50,000 times to date!
Community engagement fundamentals expands its reach
More than 350 STEM community managers have now completed our foundational training course, Scientific Community Engagement Fundamentals (CEF). In 2024, we ran the course twice for general registration, and also hosted two private cohorts (one for CZI, and one in collaboration with the Australian Research Data Commons in a time zone more compatible for those in Australia and New Zealand). If you’d like to take the course, there are a few places left in in our upcoming January cohort!
This year, we also conducted a medium-term evaluation of CEF in an effort to better quantify its impact on individual community managers, the communities they manage, and the broader STEM ecosystem. In March we published a report summarizing our findings, which included impacts at all three levels:
Deepening of skills and increased confidence for individual community managers
Improvements in member participation within communities
New connections and shared practices between communities and community managers across the ecosystem of learners
