Measuring the impact community management training has on the STEM ecosystem

Since we launched our foundational training course, Scientific Community Engagement Fundamentals (CEF), almost four years ago, we’ve trained more than 300 individuals at 200+ organizations in community-building frameworks while connecting them to one another. At the end of each training we ask our graduates about their experiences in the course, and how they imagine they’ll use their learnings to guide their community programming.

Next month, we’ll be releasing a new medium-term evaluation of CEF, in which we follow up with our graduates to determine how they put their learnings into practice. Our study, funded by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, was designed to assess impact at three levels – on the individual, on their organization, and on the STEM ecosystem as a whole. We’re really excited by what we’re seeing in the data so far, and we hope you’ll join us on Wednesday, 24 April for our monthly community call, at which we’ll be talking about our findings.

Our April community call will also feature presentations from Jason Williams, lead author of the Bicycle Principles (a framework for designing and evaluation short-form trainings in STEM) and Paz Bernaldo, who has been working to evaluate the impact of OLS’ Open Seeds training program. It promises to be a rich conversation for anyone working to deliver trainings or evaluate the impact of their programming.

Speaking of community calls, since we sent out our last newsletter, we’ve hosted a conversation about community management using the language of gardening (the latest in our metaphor series). You can now download our latest free concept booklet recapping different aspects of the metaphor. And in February’s call we shared a preview of one of the frameworks from our Content Design (CODE) course. Our community calls are a great way of connecting with other scientific community managers, and all are welcome to attend.

CODE introduces a strategic approach to designing and creating community-engaged content. It’s for anyone regularly creating content – newsletters, blog posts, slides decks, and more!

Creating Community Playbooks (PBK)

PBK is for anyone who wants to create or update a community playbook, collaboration guide, or lab manual, but needs some guidance and/or accountability to get it made, used, and kept up to date.

PBK24S will run from 15 July until 29 August 2024

Scientific Community Engagement Fundamentals (CEF)

CEF offers new or existing community managers core frameworks and vocabulary as they refine or create strategic programming to engage community members around their shared goals.

CEF24F will run from 12 September until 31 October 2024

Community Manager Certification

CSCCE’s Community Manager Certification Program builds upon CEF to create a longer-form, multi-component, online program for STEM community managers to equip them and their organizations with skills and frameworks to ground their work in a community-centric leadership approach – and to signal those qualifications to others.

April’s community call – Evaluating the impact of short-form training in the STEM ecosystem

On our April Community Call (Wednesday, 24 April at 11am EDT / 3pm UTC), we’ll be focusing on how to evaluate the impact of professional development trainings on individual participants, their organizations, and the STEM ecosystem as a whole. Join us to learn more about our recent evaluation of CEF, how OLS has been measuring the impact of their cohort-based training, and why the Bicycle Principles are a valuable framework for training design and evaluation.

March’s community call – The garden metaphor for community engagement

Last week’s community call explored the garden metaphor for community management – from preparing your soil to harvesting your vegetables. All of our thinking about the garden metaphor, as well as the questions we used to facilitate this call, are now available for free download in our newest concept booklet.

February’s community call – The informational roles of community-engaged content

At our February community call, we discussed community-engaged content and the different ways of designing it to effectively convey information that inspires your members into action. Our “informational roles” framework is one of several we use to demystify the content-creation process in CODE, and is designed to help community managers design content that meets their strategic goals.

Community Manager of Research Data Resources at the Michael J. Fox Foundation

The Community Manager of Research Data Resources is focused on fostering an inclusive, online community of research data users who can more easily work with each other using data that have been generated through MJFF-funded projects in the search for a cure, treatments and interventions for people living with Parkinson’s Disease. The Foundation takes a holistic approach to investing in Parkinson’s research, providing intellectual and financial capital to accelerate discovery and therapeutic development. As part of this strategy, MJFF collaborates with the researcher community to collect, distribute, and promote the accessibility of a multitude of research data resources. As Community Manager, you will be focused on fostering an inclusive, online community of research data users who can more easily work with each other using data that have been generated through MJFF-funded projects in the search for a cure, treatments, and interventions for people living with Parkinson’s Disease.
