It’s our community’s first birthday!

That’s right, it’s a year since we launched the CSCCE community of practice for scientific community managers. And what a year it has been! We’ve expanded to a team of 3 staff members, grown our community of practice to more than 200 members, released 25 free-to-download resources, launched 7 curated resource pages, and more! CSCCE is one year old!

This week, CSCCE is celebrating the first birthday of our community of practice. In this blog post, we summarize the year in numbers, and kick off a series of posts in which we’ll look back on our community’s accomplishments, lessons learned, and goals for the future.

October Community Call

Our October call (tomorrow, 21 October at 6pm UTC / 2pm US EDT) will focus on the role of community in scholarly communication, with presentations from members of our community who work at ORCID, Crossref, Protocols.io, and ASAPbio.

Working successfully online

Our online Tools Trials, which test different technology options for virtual events with members of the CSCCE community, take place on Thursdays at noon Eastern / 4pm UTC.

Working collaboratively online with Etherpad+video

Etherpad is a customizable, open source platform for creating collaborative documents. Similar in a lot of ways to Google docs, Etherpad recently added a new video chat integration, which we tried out in this Tools Trial.

Hosting conferences in a virtual conference center with Remo

A couple of weeks after trying out Gather, we demo-d Remo in our Tools Trial. The two platforms are similar in a lot of ways, and offer an intuitive layout to users who create avatars and move around a custom-built space.

Networking and icebreakers in Wonder

Wonder offers a lightweight solution for users wanting to host networking or social events where participants move around a space to join or leave group video chats. The platform having undergone some recent updates, we tried out a couple of options for hosting icebreaker events.
